Learn which one you are and how to improve your skills.

There has always been an ongoing debate about the differences between a leader and a manager. Many assert that leaders have followers, while managers have subordinates. Reading numerous articles on management and leadership styles revealed several core differences between the two, likely resulting in such portrayals.

That said, I’ve come to believe that these differences exist on a continuum. On one extreme, you can be a great manager, and on the other, you can be considered a true-blue leader.

Most of us will fall somewhere in the middle as both manager and leader, depending on the circumstances we face. So how can you tell if you are manager material or born to lead? Here are 8 core differences that can help you decide.

1. Visionary Vs. Task-Oriented

Leaders are more concerned about the direction or overall strategy of the organization, giving their followers the freedom to plan the details and meet goals and objectives. Managers, on the other hand, handle immediate tasks or hit short-term goals.

visionary leader concept

It may be appropriate to say that leaders think big, while managers are more task-oriented. Having a vision for the organization is of utmost importance to leaders, while managers focus on how to execute that vision.

2. Transformational Vs. Transactional

Managers adopt a solely transactional approach to subordinates, seeking their services in exchange for a paycheck. Leaders, however, go beyond such transactional needs to satisfy higher levels of needs for their followers, such as the need to find meaning in their work.

This appeals to followers, being transformational in the sense that these employees are not working for themselves; they are working for the team or the organization beyond self-interest.

3. Elected Vs. Hired

Titles and authority are granted to managers so they have the necessary power to make people do as they say. Leaders are elected by the people who choose to follow them rather than being made or paid to do so. Respect is not guaranteed for managers but is already earned by leaders.

leader with followers

Thus, leaders are more influential because they have followers who do what they say out of respect. Managers get their subordinates to follow their orders out of authority. Naturally, employees will be happier doing what the leaders want rather than what the managers say.

4. Servant Vs. Self-serving

A leader serves their followers rather than using them to serve themselves. In other words, leaders fight for their followers and put the group’s needs beyond their own. Managers, however, may put blame on their subordinates when things go wrong and take credit when things go right.

leader helping employees

A manager’s role is to manage subordinates to attain certain managerial objectives. Leaders, on the other hand, value their followers and seek to serve the entire group.

5. Character-Building Vs. Skill-Building

Since managers are task-oriented and aim to hit short-term goals, their training philosophy tends to be skill-based. If a certain skill or knowledge is required to complete a task, a manager will acquire a worker with the required skills to perform the job.

leader developing skills

Leaders are not just looking at what is in front of them; they seek out potential—what people can do in the future rather than what they can already do now. Therefore, their training philosophy emphasizes character-building.

6. Trust Vs. Control

Leaders think ahead and set directions for the group, placing their trust in their followers to make necessary plans to move forward. The trust associated with leaders empowers followers to make decisions on day-to-day matters freely.

manager controlling team

Managers, on the other hand, think only about how to get tasks done in the most efficient manner, setting detailed instructions for subordinates to follow. They seek control over subordinates to ensure optimal results.

7. Seeking Possibilities Vs. Avoiding Risks

Working within the scope of tasks and goals can bring rigidity to managers because there is little flexibility involved. This systematic approach can render managers averse to risks.

Conversely, leaders do not confine themselves to short-term goals or “firefighting.” They are open to new ideas and seek possibilities for the team and the organization. Instead of using old and tested methods like managers, leaders always look for new ways of doing things.

8. Growth Vs. Sustenance

Leaders, with their visionary approach, focus on growth rather than sustenance for the organization and the people. Managers are more interested in getting the job done, with little or no emphasis on growth.

leadership driving growth

As a result, leaders initiate changes, while good managers adapt to them. This also applies to people management, where leaders groom followers for the long-term, while managers train subordinates only in what is necessary for the job.

Conclusion

Although this article may cast managers in a bad light and glorify leaders, my personal opinion is that a leader needs to be a good manager to be effective. After all, what are dreams and visions without proper planning and, more importantly, action?

Many interviewers use phone interviews as a pre-screening filter for further assessments. Think it’s a piece of cake getting ready for your phone interview with a potential employer? Beware, your chances of making it to the follow-up interview depend on how well you perform on the phone and how effectively you ace your interview.

Contrary to popular belief, phone interviews can be significantly different from face-to-face interviews. They are an exchange of verbal words without any hint of body language, so you can’t rely on non-verbal cues to make an impression. In such circumstances, pausing too long could suggest hesitation or a loss of concentration.

Phone interviews require a unique strategy to succeed. Here are 8 essential tips to help you prepare and excel in your upcoming phone interview.

1. Prepare Like It’s In-Person

Many people believe that a telephone interview is easier than a face-to-face interview. To some extent, that may be true because you’ll feel less pressure without the physical presence of the interviewer.

However, this perception often leads interviewees to treat phone interviews lightly, unknowingly sabotaging their chances by going in unprepared or using a less formal tone with the interviewer.

phone interview

The best approach is to treat the phone interview just like any formal in-person interview. Prepare and rehearse answers to tackle common interview questions.

Consider washing up and dressing up for the occasion, even if you’re conducting the interview from home. This will put you in the right mindset to communicate with the interviewer properly.

2. Speak Clearly & With Energy

Not having the interviewer see your anxiety might be beneficial, but it can also be detrimental. Since they can’t see you, they’ll rely heavily on your voice tone and pitch to assess you and gauge your confidence level.

We often sound different (and sometimes weird) over the recorder. Even if you think you’re speaking clearly and with energy, the other party may perceive it differently.

To get accurate feedback on how you sound over the phone, practice with a few friends and ask them to help you identify areas for improvement. Alternatively, record your voice and play it back to hear how you sound. Common speech issues include speaking too fast, slurring, and talking monotonously. The key is to practice, practice, and practice more.

3. Body Language Matters

Try this: smile and talk to yourself in front of a mirror, then compare it with talking to yourself without smiling. You’ll notice that your voice sounds more lively and friendly when you smile because your vocal cords are pulled differently. Additionally, you’ll instinctively feel more relaxed and positive.

So what does this mean? If you slouch on your couch during the phone interview, you will sound different than when you are sitting upright in a chair. The interviewer can tell the difference because your posture affects how you breathe and, consequently, your tone of voice.

phone interview airpods

If possible, try to use a Bluetooth headset during the interview so that your hands are free to gesture. Gesturing is known to facilitate thinking, help you be more fluent in your speech, and increase the level of enthusiasm in your voice.

4. Have All the Info with You

One advantage of a phone interview is that you can lay out all the information you need in front of you. This allows you to worry less about recalling the details of your resume or stumbling over a tough interview question that requires an online check.

To be safe, have a computer with you and stay connected throughout the interview. This is for emergencies when the interviewer asks something you didn’t prepare for and you need to quickly find an answer.

be prepared phone interview

They might ask questions related to the company you’re applying for, or general knowledge about the industry (e.g., who are our competitors and what market share do they hold?). Whatever the question, don’t take too long on your search, or you will seem inattentive, preoccupied, or hesitant. They might even hear you typing!

5. Anticipate the Uncertainty

Like face-to-face interviews, expect periods of silence from the interviewer. It’s easy to jump to conclusions and feel uncomfortable when that happens. Don’t be too quick to fill in the gaps to break the silence, as it might give a less-than-confident vibe. Remember that the interviewer may be taking notes.

To lessen the uncertainty and gain some control, try this: Get a photo of your interviewer if possible and place it in front of you. As the interview progresses, look at the photo and visualize the interviewer’s expression to reduce your anxiety.

It will feel much more natural for you as you speak and help relieve your tension compared to simply listening and responding to the voice on the other side of the line.

6. Arrange Appropriate Time & Place

One advantage you have as an interviewee is the freedom to arrange the time and environment for the interview. Even if they call impromptu, they will usually ask if you’re okay to take the interview now or prefer a more suitable time.

Try to agree on a time when you’re most energetic, such as in the morning, and have some extra time to spare, just in case the interview takes longer than expected (typically 20 to 30 minutes).

Once you’ve fixed the interview appointment, prepare the interview environment. Common sense tells you that you’ll want it to be a place where it’s quiet with few distractions.

professional phone interview

However, you probably wouldn’t want to conduct the phone interview in your office if you’re switching jobs. The best place is your home, ideally in a locked room if you live with others or have pets around.

7. When Unclear, Paraphrase

Sometimes you may have the tough luck of getting an inexperienced interviewer or one who mumbles. It may seem improper to ask them to repeat what was asked, as it might make you sound inattentive or easily distracted. What do you do then?

One effective way is to paraphrase their questions. Turn their question into a question from a different angle and ask for verification. This will appear more polite than saying “I’m sorry?” or “Can you repeat your question?” and helps avoid offending the interviewer.

It’s okay even if you paraphrase incorrectly because it shows that you’ve made an effort to understand what was being asked.

8. Check Your Landline or Mobile Phone Line

Although it’s the era of mobile phones, if you don’t want to risk poor phone reception or, even worse, disconnection, opt for a more reliable landline. If none is available, ensure that all your notifications and alerts are turned off if you can anticipate their call.

The sudden background tone or vibration can be a major distraction during the interview. Again, treat it like an actual face-to-face interview.

Whether you’re using a mobile phone line or a landline, check with someone to ensure the other side can hear you loud and clear. Do the same checks for volume and distortions to ensure both sides are comfortable conversing through the phone.

Just like freelance bloggers encounter writer’s block, freelance designers frequently face creative hurdles. It’s particularly challenging when you’re pressed for time to deliver a project to a client. There you are, fixated on your screen, wishing for a breakthrough idea to emerge spontaneously.

Instead of passively waiting for inspiration, there are proactive steps you can take to reignite your creativity. Often, the best ideas come when you shift your focus away from the problem. So, what activities can help divert your attention and spark innovation?

Here are some effective strategies I’ve come up with to help you break through the creative block and reclaim your artistic flow. Implement these tips diligently, and watch your creativity soar!

1. Maintain a Positive Attitude

It might sound cliche, but there’s strong evidence that positivity can unlock creativity. Psychological studies reveal that a good mood can make us more open to diverse ideas and perspectives, fostering out-of-the-box thinking. In contrast, negativity tends to narrow our focus, limiting our creative potential.

believe in yourself

Feeling stuck? Don’t panic—it could exacerbate the block. Instead, engage in enjoyable activities such as your hobbies, take a walk, or chat with friends. By alleviating stress, you pave the way to innovative thinking.

2. Dedicate Time to Find Inspiration

Even with looming deadlines, setting aside time for inspiration is crucial for creativity. Like medical doctors who stay abreast of advancements, freelance designers must continually expose themselves to new ideas.

doodling creativity

Cultivate a habit of seeking inspiration daily, whether it’s through listening to music while working, doodling, or engaging in other forms of artistic expression. You might be surprised at how ideas can cross-pollinate across different mediums.

3. Collaborate with Other Designers

Collaboration can significantly enhance your creative process. By discussing your challenges with other designers, you not only gain fresh perspectives but also refine your existing concepts. This interaction is a vital part of the learning and creative process, as it encourages you to remain open and responsive to feedback.

graphic designers collaborating

Sharing your design dilemmas can often lead to unexpected solutions or at least help clarify your thoughts. Plus, knowing that your peers are likely facing similar challenges can provide comfort and motivate you to overcome your creative hurdles.

4. Allocate Time and Space for Creativity

While it might be challenging, convincing your clients to provide adequate time for a project can greatly enhance the quality of your designs. The pressure of a tight deadline often leads to a fear of risk-taking, pushing you towards tried and tested methods. This environment is not conducive to creativity.

time to think

If negotiating more time isn’t feasible, try to create the perception of more time for yourself. Regular breaks or meditation can help maintain creative flow, even if you need to shorten these pauses when deadlines are tight. Remember, it’s the quality of your breaks that fuels creativity, not necessarily their length.

Often, the most creative ideas arise when we least expect them, as our subconscious works behind the scenes. Temporarily stepping away from your work allows your subconscious to tackle problems without direct pressure.

5. Explore New Approaches

Sticking too closely to routine can lead to a creative block, not just in design, but in life generally. If your day-to-day becomes too predictable, your creative spark may dwindle.

To combat this, shake up your routine. Engage in activities outside your norm like watching a genre of movie you usually avoid, trying new cuisines, or taking an unfamiliar route on your commute. These small changes can stimulate your senses and invigorate your creativity. Embrace new experiences to refresh your creative perspective.

Do you work to live or live to work? Freelance designers often start with the idea that their work will be flexible because they can set their own schedules. However, constant project demands can lead to burnout. We all know that when we can’t balance work and life, it affects us emotionally. Ironically, being a workaholic can actually hinder your ability to achieve your goals.

We often read articles or gather information online about achieving a balanced lifestyle. But do we really take action? Or do we just push ourselves harder to meet deadlines? Read on for some tips to help you find balance between work and life, so you can be an optimal functioning human being.

Make Time for Exercising!

Most freelancers lead a sedentary lifestyle. When you spend more than three-quarters of your waking hours sitting in front of your computer, it’s easy to become physically out of shape. We all know this can lead to health problems like cardiovascular diseases and obesity. Exercise improves your immune system, reducing your chances of falling sick!

Besides physical health, staying fit has been proven to improve mental health. Exercise can enhance your mood and cognitive functions like memory and concentration, which are crucial for work productivity.

woman exercising

From now on, set aside some time each day to exercise. Even if you’re short on time, try to work out for at least twenty minutes. The great thing is that exercise doesn’t have to be a chore; you can choose physical activities you enjoy and even do them with a friend. Cycling, swimming, dancing, running—the list goes on. Regular exercise will definitely make your mind sharper and clearer.

Quality Time with Friends and Family

Everybody needs social support from friends and family, but the question is how much and whether you are getting it. Additionally, relationships are two-way, so you need to consider how much you are willing to dedicate yourself to your loved ones.

This is something you need to determine for yourself. If you have a family, it’s important to maintain good communication with them regularly, even daily. Being at home working on projects doesn’t mean you’re spending quality time with them. Your attention is often more on work than anything else.

spend time with friends

If you are single, you probably have more flexibility in how you allocate your time for friends and family. Organize outings now and then and truly enjoy yourself when you’re there. Don’t take your work with you everywhere. When it’s time to relax and have fun, do just that. It’s a great way to recharge before diving back into work.

Nurturing relationships with loved ones may not seem as urgent as your work, so it’s tempting to prioritize work over them. However, if you set aside a bit of your working time, you’ll find that it’s well spent in the long run and truly worthwhile. Isn’t it wonderful to know we are not in this alone?

Go for Vacations

Taking a vacation is a perfect way to recharge from the drudgery of work. No matter how much you love your job, focusing on work day in and day out can drain anyone’s passion and energy.

For creative occupations like designers, it’s essential to open up your mind and perspectives to find inspiration. If you follow a rigid schedule every day and spend most of your time working at home, it’s hard to gather creative ideas. However, when you travel to a new environment, you experience a different culture and formulate new ways of thinking. You see the world in a different light and can even come to understand yourself better.

relaxing on vacation

Additionally, planning a vacation for a few months ahead gives you something to look forward to. When you’re stressed by work, you can look at a picture of a Bahamas beach on your desk and imagine yourself there. You can convince yourself to work hard and endure the current stress because you’ll eventually get your well-deserved break!

One thing to note about vacations is that they should fulfill their purpose of recharging you. Make sure to go to places where you can truly relax and take your mind away from work. If city life is taxing, opt for a scenic countryside vacation. If taking care of your kids feels burdensome, consider not bringing them along. You can choose to go alone or with loved ones.

After all, it’s your trip, and you wouldn’t want to end up more stressed out afterward!

Engage in Hobbies, Learn Something

Just as traveling to different places can expand your mind, so can learning something new or indulging in hobbies. Working hard without giving yourself time to explore can make life too monotonous. It’s difficult to become more creative if you’re exposed to the same things every day.

To balance the time you spend working and the time you don’t, find something else you really want to do. The better you become at other activities besides work, the fuller your life becomes. You will see the world from different perspectives, not just through the lens of your job, but also from what you’re learning.

man doing pottery

One of the benefits of engaging in hobbies or learning something new is that it frees your mind from work. Having several activities to be involved in gives you more options to enjoy yourself. It’s like having a TV with multiple channels versus a TV with only one. You can always switch to another when you’re bored with what you’re watching.

There’s more to life than work. I’m sure you have a couple of hobbies or things you’ve wanted to learn but have been putting off. Well, make time for them!

Daily Reflection Time

Finally, you need to have time for yourself every day. No, I don’t mean spending time with your loved ones; I mean having time alone with your own thoughts.

We all need some time for ourselves, whether we are extroverts or introverts. It doesn’t have to be long; fifteen minutes a day is enough. This time allows you to be conscious of your goals, dreams, and life purpose. When you’re not aware of what you’re doing daily, weeks, months, and even years can slip by quietly. That’s fine if you know what you’re doing, but what if you don’t and miss out on what’s truly important to you?

woman thinking

Another benefit of taking time to think and reflect is that it allows you to temporarily distance yourself from work and other stressors. You might have existing issues that you can’t seem to solve, no matter how much you ponder over them. Sometimes, the answers to these problems pop up when you’re not focusing on them. This is likely because you are less tense, allowing your subconscious mind to figure things out for you.

One thing to be cautious about is the tendency to use this time to worry about work. This should be an opportunity to put things in proper perspective, not to burden yourself further with problems. If you tend to indulge in counterproductive ruminations, use this period to clear your mind instead. Try learning some simple meditation techniques to lower your stress levels.

Conclusion

The reason we often neglect our personal lives is that there don’t seem to be any deadlines, unlike our projects and tasks. Yet, it is crucial to maintain our personal lives, just like we should maintain our computers to keep them functioning at their best.

I’m not asking you to devote half your time to work and the other half to your personal life; that depends on you. I’m only reminding you that we need to offer ourselves time to focus on things that are more important in life than just work.

Have you ever found yourself secretly playing a game on your office computer, only to swiftly switch tabs with Alt + Tab at the slightest sign of your boss approaching? If you’re even a second late, you might end up getting a lecture on work ethics from your boss.

It’s common for employers to discourage such distractions, but what about Facebook, minus the games? Is it possible for employees to remain productive at work while having free access to it? Beyond just games, Facebook can also serve as a platform for self-expression and stress relief during work. So, the question arises: can Facebook be a truly effective tool for managing work-related stress? Let’s explore this topic.

Organizational Culture

In my view, whether employees can access Facebook often depends on the organizational culture. In simple terms, organizational culture encompasses the psychology, attitudes, experiences, beliefs, and values of an organization. The level of freedom and trust extended to employees can influence an employer’s decision to limit or prohibit certain non-work related activities.

facebook addiction

Indeed, the greater the freedom one has, the more control they are likely to feel. In the realm of industrial-organizational psychology, the level of control an individual has over their job can significantly predict their job satisfaction and stress levels. Consequently, limiting access to social media like Facebook can reduce employees’ control over their job, potentially leading to lower satisfaction and increased stress at work.

Restricting access to Facebook is often seen as a sign of distrust by employers towards their employees. Moreover, any form of control over employees’ activities can diminish trust. Additionally, such measures may not even be effective given the widespread use of smartphones today.

Facebook Addiction

Similarly to how one can become addicted to gaming, addiction to Facebook is also a possibility. Employers are rightly concerned about employees frequently checking Facebook, which can become excessive and disruptive.

facbook mobile

Complicating matters, Facebook can be more addictive than games due to its dynamic nature—regular updates from friends can be particularly distracting during mundane or repetitive tasks at work.

More Than a Game

Facebook transcends mere gaming; it’s a robust social platform. Users can interact with friends, share and view photos, comments, and status updates, and engage actively with their social circles.

Although some experts argue that such platforms do not facilitate genuine interactions, it’s undeniable that people often use Facebook to fulfill their social needs. In our busy lives, could a platform like Facebook actually enhance workplace productivity by meeting employees’ social needs and reducing their stress?

people using facebook

There is an argument that relying on digital communication for social needs might disrupt workplace unity. Could the reliance on Facebook for social interactions diminish face-to-face communication among colleagues? If so, productivity could suffer as some attention is diverted to socializing online rather than fostering meaningful relationships with co-workers.

Solution: Setting Ground Rules?

Given these concerns, might it be beneficial for companies to establish some guidelines? On one hand, employers need to build trust by allowing more job control, as a happy employee tends to be more productive.

On the other hand, it is crucial for employers to ensure that Facebook use does not interfere with work. Facebook’s addictive nature could potentially replace valuable in-person interactions at work.

Clearly, there is a need to find a balance between keeping employees content and motivated to work. What if we designate specific times for activities like checking Facebook, such as during lunch or tea breaks? At this juncture, one might wonder why not completely ban Facebook at work? According to PCWorld, outright banning Facebook at work is not recommended.

One ‘But’: The Rise of Smartphones

With the widespread use of smartphones like iPhones, restricting access to Facebook at work may be futile. These multipurpose devices allow anyone to easily access their Facebook, play games, and more.

facebook notifications

Unless a company is strict enough to ban the use of such smartphones, there’s not much that employers can do. Ultimately, a significant part of the responsibility rests on the employees’ shoulders.

My Two Cents’ Worth: It All Boils Down to Work Culture

Considering it may not be practical to restrict Facebook access, especially as employees today have greater control over their work activities due to advanced technology like smartphones, is there no way for employers to manage Facebook use to maintain optimal productivity?

In my opinion, the most effective way to influence employee behavior is through the organization’s culture. Interestingly, the impact of a strong work culture is often more enduring than the imposition of strict rules and regulations.

facebook at workplace

This is akin to how a country maintains order through laws. When people understand the reasons behind laws, they are more likely to abide by them willingly and feel content with their governance. Conversely, if the purpose of a law is unclear, people might only comply out of fear of punishment, and more are likely to challenge such laws.

Productivity, The Ultimate Goal

Returning to the core issue, in any organization, it’s crucial for employers to foster the right working attitude in employees. They need to understand that the ultimate goal is productivity and, increasingly important, teamwork.

The guideline should be clear: employees are free to access Facebook whenever they like, but not at the expense of their productivity or their relationships with colleagues. With this approach, employees feel trusted to make their own decisions, leading to higher job satisfaction and motivation to fulfill their duties.

Developing a strong work ethic is also vital. If employees routinely access Facebook during work hours without regard for their tasks, it’s likely that this behavior will influence new employees to do the same.

Thus, the importance of building a positive and productive work culture cannot be overstated.

Gone are the days when a job was merely a means to an end, a transaction where you traded your time and effort for money to put food on the table. Nowadays, many are seeking more than just financial stability from their jobs. They crave fulfillment in various aspects of life, including health, relationships, and personal achievements.

The reality is, while some individuals find complete satisfaction in their current roles, others may feel trapped, achieving neither their professional nor personal goals. If you’re in the latter group, it might be time to think about leaving your job—a job that brings you more dread than satisfaction. There are several factors to consider before taking this significant step, and we’ll explore them in this article. Keep reading for more insights.

Deciding to Leave: What’s Your Reason?

Instead of asking if you should quit, perhaps the better question is, when is the right time to quit your job? It’s normal to dislike certain aspects of your job, as every job comes with its own set of challenges. It’s crucial to weigh the good against the bad before making your decision.

For many, the main reason to work is to cover expenses and live comfortably. This is perfectly valid. However, remember that there might be a more fulfilling job out there that not only suits you better but can also support your lifestyle.

In order to ground this conversation in something solid, let’s turn to a famous concept by the esteemed psychologist Abraham Maslow in 1943 – Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. If you’re not familiar with this framework, it’s a pyramid-shaped model that categorizes human needs.

A pyramid diagram of Maslow's hierarchy of needs

According to Maslow, we are all driven to satisfy specific needs, starting with the most basic physiological necessities. Only after these needs are met do we aim for higher goals like safety, love and belonging, esteem, and, ultimately, self-actualization at the pyramid’s peak.

Given the significant portion of our lives we spend working, it’s appropriate to consider a job change based on how well a job can help us climb to the top of the pyramid.

Viewing the decision to quit from this lens offers a novel way to evaluate your career path. It’s about asking whether your current position fulfills your most essential needs.

Addressing Basic Needs: The Importance of Sleep

Sleep is a fundamental physiological need we often overlook. Racing against deadlines or catching up on work can lead to insufficient rest. Over time, this lack of sleep not only affects our work performance but also spills over into our personal lives, causing difficulty in concentrating and increased irritability. Eventually, the accumulated sleep debt will present serious consequences.

sleep deprived employee

If you believe that sleep deprivation isn’t significantly impacting you, then it may not be an immediate concern. However, if insufficient sleep becomes a persistent issue, it’s crucial to evaluate whether your job is truly compatible with your long-term wellbeing.

Securing Your Foundation: Financial Security

While many jobs offer some level of financial security, the key question is whether a job provides enough income to meet daily needs without the fear of hunger or homelessness. Financial stability is essential because without it, it’s hard to focus on higher-level needs.

well paying job

The reality is stark if a job does little more than keep you fed. Therefore, it’s vital to find employment that not only covers your basic needs but also allows you the surplus to chase after more fulfilling goals or save for future financial emergencies.

Fostering Connection: The Role of Work Culture

How well do you align with your workplace’s vision and values? Are you in harmony with your colleagues and superiors? These are crucial questions when assessing if your need for social connections and a sense of belonging is fulfilled. While it’s possible to function in a job without feeling a part of the organization, thriving without mutual trust and team cohesion can be challenging.

There are those who believe they can perform effectively even if they’re not well-liked at work. While this may be true, it necessitates finding emotional support and a sense of belonging outside of professional settings, whether through family, friends, or even social media during work hours.

positive work culture

Nonetheless, the trend in workplaces is shifting towards valuing connection and collective effort. Solitude is becoming less acceptable as most jobs require interaction with others and place a strong emphasis on teamwork.

Consider whether an incompatible work culture might hinder your ability to meet higher-level needs and limit your overall growth and satisfaction.

Building Self-Worth: Respect & Achievements

On the journey up Maslow’s pyramid, achieving self-esteem isn’t just about personal success and confidence; it also hinges on mutual respect. Climbing the corporate ladder at the expense of others might lead to success, but it won’t foster self-respect or the respect of your peers.

Essentially, how you view yourself in your role is key. A supportive environment that provides a sense of belonging is foundational to earning respect for your contributions.

Beyond that, finding a role that encourages your growth and builds confidence is critical. This path not only leads to personal achievement but also cultivates humility and respect for others. This level of esteem is where true self-respect is distinguished from mere ego.

self achievement

Consider whether your current job offers the opportunity for such growth and the development of a healthy self-esteem. It’s also worth reflecting on whether you see a path to excellence in your work.

Reaching Your Peak: The Journey to Self-Actualization

At the pinnacle of Maslow’s pyramid lies the essence of true happiness: self-actualization. This stage represents the height of life satisfaction, where an individual fully realizes their potential. However, achieving this level of fulfillment is rare, with Maslow suggesting it’s attained by less than 1% of adults.

This stage challenges you to reflect deeply on where your true passions lie. Assuming your job already meets your basic needs, offers supportive relationships, acknowledges your achievements, and garners respect from others, the next step is to discover what you truly love doing. It’s one thing to be skilled at something, but do you have a passion for it?

Discovering your passion is crucial, but it’s also important to assess the practicality of pursuing it as a career. If you’re contemplating a job change to follow your passion, make sure that it will still satisfy your lower-level needs. Each level of Maslow’s hierarchy builds upon the previous ones, so ensuring these foundational needs are met is key to pursuing higher goals without jeopardizing your overall fulfillment.

Before the digital age took over, our main ways of connecting with others involved sending handwritten letters to family, friends, and pen pals. We cherished phone conversations, family gatherings, parties, and various events as well.

These traditional forms of social interaction were richer and more meaningful compared to our online experiences today. This is because they allowed us to pick up on the subtleties of a person’s tone of voice during a phone call or to understand their thoughts and feelings through body language and facial expressions when meeting them in person.

Changing Times

These days, our go-to methods for communication are emails, instant messaging (IM), and social networking sites. It’s important to clarify that I’m not criticizing these groundbreaking internet innovations. They have transformed the way we connect, offering possibilities that were unimaginable before.

The thought that we can now instantly reach out to someone halfway across the globe is astounding. The ease and efficiency these digital platforms bring to work collaborations and processes are unparalleled.

social media

However, despite these advantages, there’s a growing concern that the easy access to these tools has led to an overreliance on the internet for our social interactions.

Blending Digital and Real-World Social Lives

There are essentially two camps of people: those who enhance their real-world social interactions with digital ones, and those who seem to substitute their face-to-face connections entirely with online interactions.

Intuitively, we lean towards the belief that enhancing rather than substituting is the healthier choice. After all, genuine social engagement goes beyond mere words to include the subtleties of expression and intonation.

Expressing Emotions Through Emoticons

In an attempt to bridge the gap left by text-only communication, emoticons were introduced. However, it’s universally acknowledged that these symbols fall short in conveying the full spectrum of human emotions.

expressing with emojis

Unlike emoticons, the tone of someone’s voice during a phone call can provide a much clearer insight into their feelings. In-person interactions add another layer, offering a rich tapestry of body language, facial expressions, and vocal nuances.

While online interactions can never fully replicate the depth of in-person connections, the question remains: how can we effectively blend the two?

Enhancing Our Real-World Connections Through Digital Means

While in-person interactions provide a unique experience unmatched by digital platforms, engaging in an online social life brings its own set of advantages. Platforms like Facebook serve as gateways to a plethora of ideas, cultural nuances, and perspectives that might be difficult to encounter in our daily lives.

These platforms enable us to stay updated with the latest happenings and discussions in almost real-time, providing us with fresh topics for conversation in our face-to-face interactions, thereby enriching our conversations.

personal interaction

Moreover, social networking sites and instant messaging tools pave the way for forming new friendships that would have been improbable due to geographical or cultural constraints.

The Charm of Online Social Interactions

One of the main attractions of engaging in social activities online is the low level of commitment required in the relationships formed. It’s easy to start a conversation with someone at any moment and end it just as swiftly, without the expectation of future contact. There’s no need to arrange a specific time or place to meet, making it incredibly convenient.

communication messaging

This ability to connect with others at any hour, even late into the night, appeals to many of us who find ourselves constantly busy. Online platforms allow us to present ourselves in any way we choose – a level of flexibility and convenience that meets the social needs of those who are content with these more casual forms of interaction.

Finding the Perfect Harmony in Digital and Physical Socializing

As we dive deeper into the digital world, the line between our online and offline social lives becomes increasingly blurred. Spending more time online often means sacrificing face-to-face interactions. The comfort of digital communication can make the idea of engaging in real-world conversations seem daunting.

It’s crucial to ensure that our online interactions do not overshadow our offline connections.

The convenience of staying in touch through the internet is undeniable, but it’s important to be aware of the potential downsides. A balanced approach involves using offline opportunities to make new acquaintances and online platforms to nurture these relationships further. Setting aside specific times for online socializing can help manage our time more effectively, preventing us from getting lost in endless browsing or chatting on social media platforms.

digital interaction

Moreover, integrating our offline social circles with our online activities, such as engaging in conversations on social networks, can enhance our relationships, ensuring they remain vibrant and continue to strengthen until our next in-person meeting.

Wrapping It Up

Ultimately, recognizing the unmatched value of in-person interactions over digital ones is essential. True connection comes from spending quality time together in the physical world, not from the solitude of our digital screens.

By carving out time to regularly meet with friends, we rediscover the deep connections we’ve been neglecting. This commitment helps us move towards a healthier balance between our online and offline lives, showing us that our digital social engagements can enrich rather than detract from our real-world relationships.

As the Internet becomes an integral part of our lives, both professionally and personally, our minds are adapting to its rapid evolution. The constant online presence has become so ingrained in our routine that disconnecting feels unnatural. Our need for continuous access to messaging, social media, and various apps is a testament to our desire to remain connected.

Visualization of Internet's impact on brain

This reliance on digital technology is significantly influencing our thought processes, notably among the Gen-Z population who have never experienced a world without it.

Often, we’re not conscious of external factors impacting our internal state, as these influences are usually subconscious. This is true for technologies that have become deeply embedded in our daily lives, from televisions to the internet. Here are some significant ways in which the internet has been transforming our minds, often without our realizing it.

1. Enhances Brain Function

Navigating the internet, which involves searching and clicking through various links, is a more complex activity than reading books. A study involving middle-aged and elderly participants found that those engaging in web searches showed more significant brain activity than those less familiar with the internet.

A follow-up brain scan two weeks later revealed that after spending an hour each day on the internet for a week, even the inexperienced users demonstrated brain activity similar to seasoned internet users.

Brain activity comparison in internet users

This study indicates that internet use can effectively rewire our brains. Areas of the brain associated with memory and decision-making were particularly stimulated during these sessions, suggesting an enhancement in these cognitive functions due to internet usage.

Considering the impact of a brief exposure to internet training on cognitive abilities, it’s exciting to think about the potential advancements in our mental capabilities from prolonged exposure to not only search engines but also social media and the diverse range of interactive online content. The substantial increase in user-generated content over the past decade highlights our growing creativity and adaptability.

2. Fosters Creativity

The internet has empowered everyone to express themselves and connect with others worldwide. This environment, where we’re all striving to be heard, encourages creativity. Whether we’re updating Facebook statuses, sharing photos, or engaging in other online activities, we’re eager to share our lives, despite privacy concerns.

The drive to stand out on social media and the internet spurs us to be more inventive and original with our posts.

Creativity in digital expression

As we transition from passive TV consumption to active online interaction, we experience what Clay Shirky from Wired Magazine calls “cognitive surplus“, leading to activities that require more participation and engagement than mere TV viewing.

Our exposure to millions of creative works on platforms like YouTube and social networking sites, including inspiring quotes and innovative ideas, is undeniably enhancing our creativity and inspiration.

3. Impacts Self-Image

However, this creative freedom can lead to self-doubt and insecurity as we compare our lives with others’ social media portrayals. It’s important to remember these posts often only show positive aspects, leading to unnecessary envy over seemingly perfect lives.

Studies have shown that a significant number of users feel worse about their own lives after visiting Facebook, particularly those who passively browse without contributing.

Influence of social media on self-image

For some, social media engagement has become a measure of self-worth, contributing to issues like Facebook-induced depression and addiction. Much of this stems from perceived social pressures and self-esteem challenges.

4. Reduces Attention Span

The internet’s structure, filled with hyperlinks, has led to a decrease in our ability to focus on a single topic. This non-linear browsing style conditions us to scan content briefly before moving on.

Often, we’re distracted by new topics before finishing what we started, posing a challenge for content creators to retain reader engagement.

Shortened attention span due to internet

Statistics confirm our growing impatience online, with studies showing a significant drop in average attention span. Office workers, for example, check their email 30 times an hour, and many webpages are viewed for only a few seconds.

This trend towards fleeting attention spans encourages multitasking and challenges our ability to concentrate on one task at a time.

5. Promotes Multitasking

Our reduced ability to focus on one thing has led us to multitask, doing several things at once. You might be reading this article while listening to music, chatting online, or even exercising. This is becoming increasingly common with the proliferation of smart devices.

Person multitasking with technology

While multitasking is often seen as productive, it actually divides our attention and can impair cognitive function. Studies suggest that multitasking can lead to greater distractions and reduced mental acuity. Only about 2% of people, known as supertaskers, can handle multiple tasks effectively.

Test your multitasking skills with the online “Gatekeeper Task for Supertasker” developed by researchers.

6. Alters Memory Function

A study by psychologist Dr. Betsy Sparrow suggests the internet acts as an “external memory storage” for us. Participants in memory experiments were more likely to recall trivia when they couldn’t search for answers online. Interestingly, when typing trivia into a computer, they remembered folder locations better than the trivia itself.

This indicates the internet’s role as a transactive memory source, changing how we remember things. Instead of relying solely on our brain, we now use the internet as a resource for information retrieval.

With this “outsourcing” of memory, our capacity for recall is no longer confined to our brain’s limits. Search engines like Google have become our primary means of accessing information.

The need for employee creativity is growing due to rapid advancements in technology. This is clear when observing major companies like Google, who have implemented a "20 percent program." This program allows Google developers to use 20% of their workday to pursue side projects, providing an opportunity for innovative thinking. Google News, for example, is a successful product that emerged from this program.

unleash creativity

Some people might believe that creativity is an innate characteristic rather than a skill that can be developed. However, without a supportive environment for expressing creativity, it’s difficult for imaginative employees to generate new ideas.

This article aims to provide strategies you can implement in the workplace to foster innovation among your employees.

Related posts:

1. Reward Creativity

To inspire employees to think creatively, offer incentives for their ideas. It’s crucial to take their suggestions seriously so they feel motivated to continue contributing innovative solutions. If their ideas aren’t considered, they may see it as a waste of time.

rewarding employees

You can start by setting goals for employees to find ways to improve work processes. For example, each employee could submit one idea per week, and you can evaluate which is the best. Follow up by rewarding the winning employee and, just as importantly, implementing their idea. Rewards can be tangible, such as monetary incentives, or intangible, like public recognition within the organization.

2. Anonymity & Confidentiality

Employees may be eager to share creative ideas but lack the means to express them. While some might feel comfortable speaking directly to management, others may be too shy or hesitant. Providing a suggestion box or similar method allows these employees to submit ideas anonymously and confidentially, fostering a culture of creativity within the organization.

However, some of the most innovative ideas emerge from group brainstorming sessions, where people discuss and debate possible solutions. Relying solely on private channels for idea submission might limit the creative process and prevent those with effective ideas from receiving proper recognition. It’s important to strike a balance between private and public avenues for employees to offer their suggestions.

3. Innovation Teams

One structured approach to fostering creativity in the workplace is to establish innovation teams. Each team can be assigned a specific aspect of the work process to improve, with deadlines set to ensure timely presentation of ideas. If their proposals are exceptional, the teams can be rewarded. This approach signals the organization’s appreciation for work-related creativity.

team creativity

However, some employees might view innovation teams as overly deliberate. Creativity is often seen as spontaneous, arising from moments of genius. The idea of formalized teams could feel like an added burden for those involved, and the focused approach on a single topic might be perceived as too restrictive for creativity to thrive.

4. Foster a Supportive Environment for Creativity

Employees may hesitate to take risks if they’re unsure whether the organization values creativity. It’s essential to steer the company in the right direction and demonstrate that creative thinking is appreciated. This involves being receptive to employees’ ideas and communicating your intent to cultivate a more innovative company.

A key reason employees might avoid thinking unconventionally or proposing different solutions is the fear of potential consequences from making mistakes. Encouraging risk-taking and normalizing it within the organization is crucial. Building a creative culture takes time, but it begins with management being more open-minded and less judgmental toward employees’ suggestions.

5. Promote Diversity Among Employees

When everyone thinks alike, the exchange of diverse ideas becomes limited. Employees with similar backgrounds, qualifications, and experiences create a homogenous work environment. While this might foster team bonding, it can also stifle creativity by limiting the range of perspectives and ideas.

workplace diversity

Instead of imposing strict recruitment requirements, consider being more flexible in your criteria. Hire staff with varied backgrounds and knowledge, and encourage them to collaborate on projects and participate in company events. Organize informal gatherings for employees with different profiles to facilitate the exchange of thoughts and ideas.

6. Cultivate a Positive Work Environment

A overly serious mindset can sometimes obstruct creativity. Enjoying work and feeling relaxed can lead to inspiration and innovative ideas. On the other hand, a stressful or gloomy work environment may hinder creative thinking, with employees simply looking forward to the day’s end.

positive work environment

Psychological studies show that a positive mood can boost creativity. When we’re in a good mood, our thinking becomes more flexible and our perspectives broaden. This open-mindedness allows us to explore alternative solutions. With this in mind, incorporating fun into work through team-building activities or occasional retreats can be a vital component in fostering creativity in the workplace.

In the past, geeks – better described as devoted tech and computer enthusiasts – were often overlooked and undervalued in social circles. Recognizable by their iconic large, black-rimmed glasses and unique fashion choices, they were often labeled as oddballs. This perception was mainly because they spent more time interacting with computer screens than with people.

However, the tables have turned. Geeks are now celebrated for their intellectual prowess, even if they aren’t social butterflies. Celebrities like Justin Timberlake have embraced ‘geek chic’ fashion, complete with the signature eyewear. Tech moguls like Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg, and Elon Musk have become household names, admired for their groundbreaking innovations.

Today, geek culture is thriving. Video games have gained mainstream acceptance, and tech gadgets like iPhones and Xboxes are hot topics of conversation. Everyone is keenly awaiting the next big tech breakthrough.

So, what led to this dramatic shift in perception over just a few decades?

How the Internet Elevated Geek Status

The Internet has been a game-changer, serving as the lifeblood of the information age. It has democratized access to information, making it readily available to everyone. Those who ignore the Internet risk being left behind. And who were the architects of this digital landscape?

Geeks!

Armed with in-depth knowledge of technology, geeks were early adopters when the Internet first emerged. Their passion and skills enabled them to quickly adapt to new technological advancements.

Geek with technology

The Internet has evolved significantly since its inception. From basic email services to advanced social networking platforms, the digital world has expanded in unimaginable ways. Geeks have played an instrumental role in shaping this evolution.

As we look to the future, it’s clear that geeks hold the keys. They have the expertise to develop innovations that can transform our world, much like how Microsoft Windows forever changed our interaction with computers.

What could be more impressive than being a geek with the power to influence global change? That’s why embracing your inner geek is not just cool; it’s also incredibly impactful.

Geeks as Modern-Day Rebels

Geeks often challenge societal norms, making them rebels in their own right. Take Shawn Fanning, the founder of the controversial Napster, who questioned the music industry’s pricing models. Or consider ethical hackers, also known as white hats, who identify security vulnerabilities to improve overall safety. These individuals are not just tech-savvy; they’re also agents of change.

On a personal level, many geeks are non-conformists. Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerberg, both Harvard dropouts, are prime examples. They chose to follow their passions rather than stick to traditional educational paths, and their success speaks for itself.

Rebel geek girl

Standing against the grain often makes you noticeable, for better or worse. In essence, coolness is about capturing attention, and geeks do that by challenging the status quo.

Knowledge: The New Currency

In our digital age, those proficient in technology and computer systems hold significant sway. Movies often depict tech experts as powerful figures capable of monumental feats. This underscores a universal truth: knowledge is power.

Understanding how systems work gives you an advantage. In our tech-saturated world, geeks are the ones who understand and harness technology most effectively.

Nerd kids with computers

As society becomes increasingly dependent on information and technology, the role of geeks becomes even more crucial. They are the guiding lights in our technology-driven world, making them indispensable.

Still questioning the cool factor of geeks? The evidence suggests otherwise.

Enter the Realm of Geekdom

Becoming a geek doesn’t require expertise in programming languages like C, C++, C#, or Objective-C. If you’re interested in embracing your inner geek, here are some resources to get you started:

Contrary to popular belief that Facebook posts can get you fired, the social media platform can actually help elevate your career when used wisely.

While it’s true that careless posts about work can harm your professional reputation, it’s crucial to exercise caution when expressing opinions or complaints online.

On the flip side, Facebook can be a valuable tool for career growth if you use it to build meaningful connections with colleagues and clients. The effectiveness of this strategy will vary depending on your workplace culture and other factors, but some general guidelines apply universally.

Below are some tips on how to use Facebook effectively to gain the respect of your peers and superiors, and potentially improve your job standing.

Connecting with Work Colleagues on Facebook

Many people hesitate to add their bosses, coworkers, or clients on Facebook. The concern is usually about maintaining privacy and the freedom to post without work-related scrutiny. However, there are pros and cons to this approach.

connecting with colleagues on facebook

Facebook can be a tool for career growth if used wisely. By connecting with people from work, you can share posts that may positively influence your career. But be cautious – posting content that offends your work connections could harm your professional standing. The key is to be thoughtful about what you share, and we’ll discuss how to do that in upcoming tips.

Initial connections with work contacts are crucial, but you don’t have to sacrifice your privacy. Facebook now offers advanced privacy settings (Improved Friend Lists) that allow you to control who sees your posts.

Improve Your Work-Life Balance on Social Media

While it’s tempting to only share work-related posts to impress your colleagues, it’s not the best approach. Overdoing it can make you seem insincere or too focused on your job. Instead, let your personality shine through by sharing aspects of your personal life as well.

Connecting on a personal level is crucial. Share photos or posts that show you have interests outside of work. This personal touch could even improve your chances of getting a promotion.

work-life balance on social media

Many people think work and personal life should be separate, but your personality should be consistent in both. This consistency builds trust with those around you.

Unlock Networking Opportunities

Facebook is an excellent platform for expanding your professional network. You may not know colleagues from other departments well, but connecting on Facebook can deepen those relationships. You can chat, share posts, and discover common interests.

What’s the benefit? Firstly, it enhances your social life at work, providing a support system for tough times. These friends understand your work environment because they’re part of it too.

networking opportunities

Secondly, a strong network can advance your career. Being well-connected within your organization increases your visibility. If you’re friends with someone in each department, you’re more likely to be recommended for new opportunities.

Lastly, a broad network can make your job easier, especially when you need favors from other departments.

Staying Updated with Your Network

One of the benefits of using Facebook for networking is that it keeps you updated about your friends, colleagues, and clients. Whenever you log in, you can see their latest status updates or photos, helping you stay in the loop about their lives.

Getting real-time updates allows you to understand what’s currently important to your professional contacts. Sometimes, they might not directly communicate these things to you. Being informed gives you the chance to engage with their posts and make a positive impression.

This feature also helps you initiate conversations and maintain ongoing relationships with your network.

facebook network

For example, if a client posts about needing a particular service, you can offer your expertise or recommend someone who can help. This not only strengthens trust but also positions you as a go-to person for future consultations. You can even add potential clients to your network and engage with them when they show interest in your services.

Highlighting Your Skills and Knowledge

Facebook is a great platform for showcasing your skills and insights, especially if you’ve connected with work-related contacts. It’s an easy way to share your thoughts and establish yourself as a knowledgeable professional in your field.

However, be mindful of the difference between showcasing your skills and showing off. The key is moderation. Share your professional opinions occasionally, but don’t make it the sole focus of your posts.

Always maintain humility and openness. Aim for neutral posts and be receptive to any comments or feedback you may receive.

The Pros and Cons of Being a Freelancer https://www.hongkiat.com/blog/freelance-advantage-disadvantage/ https://www.hongkiat.com/blog/freelance-advantage-disadvantage/#comments Mon, 25 Sep 2023 07:01:25 +0000 https://www.hongkiat.com/blog/?p=10655 Freelancing offers freedom, but demands self-discipline and motivation.

The post The Pros and Cons of Being a Freelancer appeared first on Hongkiat.

]]>
Wondering what’s so appealing about freelancing? Imagine having the freedom to pursue your passion, manage your own schedule, and be your own boss. Sounds ideal, right? However, freelancing is a double-edged sword. While it offers unparalleled freedom, it also comes with its own set of challenges.

Before you dive headfirst into the freelancing world, it’s crucial to weigh both the advantages and drawbacks. This post aims to provide you with a comprehensive understanding of what freelancing entails, helping you make an informed decision.

Unmatched Time Flexibility

One of the most enticing aspects of freelancing is the flexibility it offers. Unlike traditional 9-to-5 jobs, freelancers have the liberty to work at their own pace and during the hours that suit them best. This flexibility can lead to increased job satisfaction and productivity.

However, this freedom comes with the responsibility of self-discipline. Without a structured schedule, you may find yourself scrambling to meet deadlines, leading to unnecessary stress and reduced quality of work.

Freelancer enjoying time flexibility

Moreover, freelancers have the advantage of not having to navigate through the complexities of sick leave applications or endure a chilly office environment when unwell. Your well-being is entirely in your hands, making it easier to focus on recovery rather than workplace repercussions.

Create Your Ideal Workspace

Freelancing allows you to tailor your workspace according to your preferences. Whether you enjoy blasting rock music or taking frequent breaks to watch your favorite shows, the choice is yours. The absence of a confined office space offers a level of control that traditional employment simply cannot match.

Ideal home office setup

Additionally, freelancing eliminates the need to engage in office politics. Without colleagues vying for promotions, the stress associated with workplace competition is significantly reduced. Your primary competitors are other freelancers, and given the vast market, this competition feels less immediate and stressful.

Enhanced Control Over Income

Working from home as a freelancer offers the opportunity to optimize your income. You save on commuting costs and time, and you may even reduce child care expenses if you can manage your work while caring for your children.

Unlike traditional employment, where salary increments and promotions are often subject to managerial reviews, your income as a freelancer is directly proportional to your efforts. You are in complete control of your financial growth, free from the constraints of office politics.

The Cost of Autonomy: Self-Discipline

While freelancing offers unparalleled freedom, it also demands a high level of self-discipline and motivation. Setting income goals is one thing; achieving them is another. The absence of a supervisory figure means you must be diligent in managing your time and meeting deadlines.

Freelancer scheduling work on calendar

Complacency can be a significant pitfall for freelancers. Once you become accustomed to your newfound freedom, there’s a risk of neglecting your responsibilities, leading to missed deadlines and subpar work. For tips on staying productive, check out this article.

The Double-Edged Sword of Solitude and Independence

Freelancing often requires you to be a jack-of-all-trades. While this can be empowering, the lack of a support system or mentorship can be challenging. Online forums can offer some guidance, but they are not a substitute for professional advice.

Working alone can also lead to feelings of isolation, which can affect your motivation and overall well-being. It’s crucial to maintain a healthy social life outside of work to counteract this. Addressing loneliness is essential, as it can be a root cause of decreased life satisfaction.

The Intersection of Work and Personal Life

Freelancing often blurs the lines between work and personal life. While this can be liberating for some, it can also lead to stress and burnout. Challenges in one area can easily spill over into the other, making it vital to establish a healthy work-life balance.

Freelancer balancing work and personal life

If you’re considering the freelance path, it’s essential to weigh these factors carefully. Your satisfaction in both work and personal life should be in harmony for a fulfilling freelance career.

Is Freelancing the Right Choice for You?

Freelancing offers both opportunities and challenges. Before making a decision, assess whether the freelance lifestyle aligns with your personal and professional goals. For those curious about the future prospects of freelancing, this infographic offers valuable insights.

Essential Facebook Etiquette: 10 Dos and Don’ts https://www.hongkiat.com/blog/facebook-etiquette/ https://www.hongkiat.com/blog/facebook-etiquette/#comments Tue, 15 Aug 2023 10:01:49 +0000 https://www.hongkiat.com/blog/?p=9638 There are some things you should and shouldn't do on Facebook; here are 10 of them.

The post Essential Facebook Etiquette: 10 Dos and Don’ts appeared first on Hongkiat.

]]>
Facebook’s meteoric rise into existence and rapid evolution over just a few years has made understanding the platform’s subtle social intricacies a complex task for users. Yet, there exists a general consensus about the courtesy or etiquette to be observed in online communication, principles that can be applied to this exceptional social networking site. However, it’s important to recognize that spontaneous social interactions don’t adhere to fixed rules, as they are in a constant state of flux.

The etiquettes outlined below should not be seen as rigid laws that must be followed to the letter. Instead, I want to stress that they are merely suggestions designed to enrich our social interactions and experiences on Facebook. It’s essential to understand that social interactions do not lend themselves to a one-size-fits-all strategy. Therefore, I urge you to consider these guidelines thoughtfully, applying them as you find appropriate, and always with a touch of personal judgment!

Five Dos:

1. DM Private Matters Instead of Posting On Feed

As much as you may have exhibitionistic tendencies and want everyone to know your most intimate secrets, others may not share the same inclination. Your friends might not take it too kindly when you post what they did last night at your house party, or any other details that are understood to be kept between your closest friends.

facebook messenger

The fact is, most of their Facebook friends will hear about it on such a public platform. The walls indeed have ears, especially so for the Facebook Feed. It’s best to keep these conversations behind closed doors in Facebook Messenger.

2. Call Rather Than Post Personal News

This isn’t just Facebook etiquette; it’s social etiquette or even common sense. If you need to inform your friends or family about some important and personal news (e.g., a death in the family), don’t declare it in the public domain. Facebook is a social networking site, and it’s supposed to be public. This means that people can find out what happened.

Another reason not to post is courtesy. It’s the same reason why you shouldn’t text (or even the phone) to break up with someone. It’s rude and insincere to convey important news, whether good or bad, without having some form of genuine communication through voice tones and body language.

3. Be Mindful of What You Post

When you have hundreds of friends and acquaintances on Facebook, you have people from all kinds of backgrounds, with different jobs, beliefs, personalities, etc. Updating your status with a general statement may seem harmless to you, but others may read it in a different light.

For example, you might make a remark about how advertisers con unsuspecting consumers into buying something they don’t need.

facebook status update

What you may not realize is that some of your friends in the advertising industry could see your status in their newsfeed. It’s a general statement, but they might think you are targeting them. Of course, it’s not going to be any fun if you’re going to consider all the possible misinterpretations before you post anything, but it’s wise to be mindful of it.

10 Common Types of Facebook Updates

4. Reply to Comments Especially If They are Questions

You post a status, and your friends make comments and ‘like’ it. I guess the least you can do is acknowledge them by replying, especially when there are questions directed at you.

I’m not saying you should do it just for the sake of doing it, but add to their comments once in a while. If you ignore them all the time, chances are that they won’t bother with your status anymore, lest they look silly talking to a wall. It’s almost like karma.

5. Avoid Posting Comments on Every Post

If you’re stalking your friend, leave it at that. Don’t make a habit of commenting on everything your friends post, or they’ll start to get suspicious. Even if you say with all honesty that you are not stalking them, it’s not going to be easy for them to believe that their status updates always appear on your newsfeed.

It’s an open secret that everyone checks out their friends’ profiles every now and then, but to comment on everything is to admit that you are constantly checking up on them. What’s even worse is that your friend’s friends might notice as well, seeing that you are a ‘regular’ commenter. If you don’t wish to be labeled a pest, try to limit your comments somewhat.

Bonus: Be Careful with Your Tone

As with all other online communication, communicating on Facebook is mostly textual. We can neither hear the voice tone nor see the body language when the other person ‘speaks.’ In other words, it’s easy for someone to think you are being sarcastic when you are not, or to misunderstand you in some other way for that matter. To complicate things, everyone has their own typing style.

One way we can compensate for the lack of cues is to use emojis. It’s pretty limited, but experience has taught me that a simple smiley face after a sentence can do wonders in neutralizing any potential tension. Smile, and the whole world smiles with you :)

Five Don’ts:

1. Make Friend Requests to Strangers

Some people have this idea that the number of ‘friends’ you have on Facebook is a status of your popularity in real life. That may be true if these ‘friends’ are people whom you know offline, and not strangers whom you randomly add while browsing through the Facebook network.

facebook facebook friend request

The idea becomes warped when people add friends merely for the sake of boosting their ‘popularity indicator’ among their peers. That’s not cool. However, if you wish to add someone for a valid reason, such as getting to know a girl you have a crush on, do so with an introduction or through a mutual friend. Skipping that step only leaves a bad impression, which is the last thing you want.

2. Tag Your Friends in ‘Unglam’ Shots

Guys may take it lightly when they are tagged in photos that look as if they’ve just woken up from bed, thinking it’s a joke pulled off by their friends. For women, though, appearing ‘unglam’ means a lot more. Of course, this applies to some men as well. What you need to take from this rule is to be sensitive about who you might be tagging in photos, especially those shots that are obviously poorly taken.

3. Overshare Yourself

Checking out the updates on your newsfeed, you see the same friend updating his status over and over again. Not insightful ones, but just posts about what he’s doing every ten minutes. How exciting. You decide to hide his posts.

Sound familiar? Probably. It’s annoying because no one is really interested in their friends’ everyday mundane activities, yet they just keep popping up in their updates. Spice up your status updates a little. Instead of telling your friends you’re in the restroom taking a leak, share something interesting about yourself.

4. Vent About Your work

Facebook is a double-edged sword when it comes to its social networking capabilities. The boon is that it enables us to connect in an unprecedented manner with friends of friends of friends through the identification of mutual friendships. On the other hand, the bane is that there’s easily a way to gather information about you by passing through such layers one by one.

Even with your most stringent Facebook privacy settings, there’s still a risk that what you post can reach people you wouldn’t want it to reach, and your co-workers and boss are the last people you want to mess with. So, just play it safe and leave your venting for somewhere private.

5. Post Chain Status Updates

Remember those chain emails that demand you forward them to all of your friends or you’ll die a horrible, horrible death? Well, Facebook has a similar kind of chain, but usually for a good cause. Someone may post a status update about a social cause, encouraging those who read it to post the status too, so that their friends will get to read it and post it as well. This chain thus spreads the cause, raising public awareness.

facebook facebook posting

The intention here is right, but sometimes too much of a good thing isn’t good. When you see your newsfeed updates filled with the same status, you get annoyed instead, and you may associate your negative emotion with that social cause.

Bonus: Flame Others

Everyone is entitled to state their own opinion on the free internet, so there’s no need to put anyone down just because you disagree (or worse, dislike the person). Sometimes I even see people criticizing the comments of a friend’s friend who replied to a post, even though they don’t know them. It’s embarrassing not only to yourself but to your friend as well.

In the spirit of good conversations, let’s keep this in mind in all our online communications, whether on Facebook, in forums, emails, etc. Don’t ruin it for everyone.

Conclusion

At the end of the day, it’s entirely up to us to follow these etiquette rules. I guess it’s about finding the balance between being fun and sensitive to everyone. On one hand, we shouldn’t restrict ourselves with rules and regulations that would limit the creativity and spontaneity of our social interactions.

On the other hand, we ought to be aware of the public nature of Facebook to protect our privacy, and at the same time, respect the fact that each one of us forms part of the Facebook experience for everyone else. Find the right balance, and you’ll not only improve that experience for yourself but also help others enjoy it as well!
