Restart is always the first thing to do when encountering an error, and for some reason, errors on your Mac, minor ones, will magically resolve after a restart. But do you know Mac has more than just one way of restarting?

Ways to restart a Mac

Knowing these methods can save you a trip to a technician or Apple Support. In this article, we’ll explore various ways to restart and start up your Mac. Whether it’s troubleshooting a stubborn problem or performing routine maintenance, these methods will help keep your Mac running smoothly.

Overview:
Methods Purpose
Manual Restart Fixes severe software issues or system crashes
Restart and Prevent Automatic Login Troubleshoots login issues, access different user accounts
Restart and Prevent Opening of Finder Windows and Login Items Identifies and resolves issues caused by login items and Finder windows
Start Up in Target Disk Mode Transfers files between Macs, access files on a non-booting Mac
Restart and Run Apple Diagnostics Identifies hardware issues
Restart and Select a Startup Disk Boots from a different drive or operating system
Start Up in Safe Mode Troubleshoots software issues by preventing certain software from loading
Start Up in macOS Recovery Troubleshoots and fixes various issues, reinstalls macOS, restores backups

1. Manual Restart

A manual restart is often necessary when your Mac becomes completely unresponsive or frozen. It forces your Mac to shut down and restart, which can help resolve software issues or system crashes that prevent normal operation.

While it’s a more drastic measure, it can be a quick fix for severe problems.

How to Perform a Manual Restart

To manually restart your Mac, press and hold the power button until the screen goes black and the computer shuts off completely.

Wait a few moments, then press the power button again to start your Mac.

Be aware that you may lose any unsaved changes in open documents when performing a manual restart.

2. Restart and Prevent Automatic Login

Preventing automatic login can be useful when troubleshooting login issues or when you need to access a different user account.

This method is especially helpful if a specific user account is causing problems or if you need to perform maintenance tasks under a different account.

It ensures you have control over the login process and can address any issues that might arise.

How to Prevent Automatic Login

To prevent automatic login, start your Mac and wait for the progress indicator to appear on the screen.

As soon as you see the progress indicator, press and hold the left Shift key.

Continue holding the Shift key until the login window appears, then release the key and proceed with logging in.

3. Restart and Prevent Opening of Finder Windows and Login Items

This method is useful when you’re troubleshooting issues that might be caused by login items or previously opened Finder windows.

Sometimes, a problematic application set to start at login can cause your Mac to become slow or unresponsive.

By preventing these items from opening, you can identify and resolve such issues without interference.

How to Prevent Finder Windows and Login Items

After clicking the Log In button in the login window, immediately press and hold the Shift key.

Keep holding the Shift key until you see the desktop.

This will prevent any login items and Finder windows from opening automatically.

4. Start Up in Target Disk Mode

Target disk mode is an efficient way to transfer files between two Macs. This method is particularly useful when one Mac isn’t booting properly, but you need to access its files.

It allows the non-booting Mac to act as an external hard drive, making file transfers quick and easy.

This can also be a lifesaver when performing data migrations or backups.

How to Use Target Disk Mode

To start up your Mac in target disk mode, follow these steps:

  1. Use a USB, USB-C, or Thunderbolt cable to connect the two Mac computers (if either Mac has macOS 11 or later, use a Thunderbolt cable).
  2. Start the Mac in Target Disk Mode by either starting it up while holding the T key if it’s off, or by going to the Apple menu > System Settings > General > Startup Disk > Restart in Target Disk Mode if it’s already on.
  3. Once the Mac has started in Target Disk Mode, its disk icon will appear on the desktop of the other Mac, allowing you to drag files to and from the disk as needed.
  4. Eject the disk by dragging its icon to the Trash, which changes to an Eject icon when you drag, then on the Mac used as a disk, press the power button to shut it down and disconnect the cable.

5. Restart and Run Apple Diagnostics

Apple Diagnostics is a powerful tool for identifying hardware issues with your Mac, such as problems with the logic board, memory, or wireless components. This tool can be especially useful if your Mac isn’t starting up properly using macOS.

By running Apple Diagnostics, you can pinpoint the exact hardware issue and seek appropriate repairs, ensuring your Mac’s functionality and safety.

If the diagnostics report a problem, such as a malfunctioning Wi-Fi card, it’s recommended to contact Apple or an authorized service provider for professional repairs, as using non-genuine parts or untrained service can compromise your device.

How to Run Apple Diagnostics

To use Apple Diagnostics, follow these steps:

  1. Ensure your Mac is connected to a stable internet connection and disconnect any external devices except the keyboard, mouse, display, and speakers.
  2. Shut down your Mac, turn it on and immediately press and hold the D key, releasing the D key when you see a progress bar or a language selection screen.
  3. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the diagnostics and review the list of potential issues detected by Apple Diagnostics once the test is complete.
  4. Before starting the diagnostics, you might want to print the instructions from the Apple Support article Use Apple Diagnostics to test your Mac by going to File > Print, then clicking Print.

6. Restart and Select a Startup Disk

Changing your Mac’s startup disk can be useful for a variety of reasons, such as booting from an external drive, running a different operating system, or accessing a network volume. This flexibility allows you to troubleshoot issues, perform maintenance tasks, or use specific software environments.

However, be cautious when selecting a network startup volume. Ensure you choose a standard network volume (displayed as a globe with a folder) and not a network install image (shown as a globe with a downward-pointing green arrow), as the latter can reinstall system software and potentially erase your disk’s contents.

How to Change the Startup Disk

To change your Mac’s startup disk and boot from a different drive, network volume, or operating system, follow these steps:

Apple Silicon Macs

  1. Shut down your Mac.
  2. Press and hold the power button until the “Loading startup options” message appears.
  3. Select the desired startup disk from the available options on the screen.
  4. Click the Continue button.
  5. To set a default startup disk, go to the Apple menu > System Settings, click General in the sidebar, then click Startup Disk on the right, select the icon of the disk you want to use as the default startup disk, and click Restart.

Mac Mini

  1. Shut down your Mac Mini.
  2. Press and hold the power button until the system indicator light turns amber.

Intel Macs

  1. Shut down your Mac.
  2. Press and hold the Option key while pressing the power button to start your Mac.
  3. When the available startup disks appear on the screen, select the desired disk.
  4. Click the Up arrow to continue.
  5. To set a default startup disk, go to the Apple menu > System Preferences, click Startup Disk, select the icon of the disk you want to use as the default startup disk, and click Restart.

7. Start Up in Safe Mode

Safe mode is a diagnostic mode that helps you troubleshoot issues by preventing certain software from loading.

This can be particularly useful if your Mac is experiencing problems that may be caused by login items, system extensions, or fonts that load during startup.

Safe mode also runs a basic check of your startup disk, repairing directory issues if needed, which can help improve your Mac’s performance and stability.

How to Use Safe Mode

Starting your Mac in safe mode can help you determine if issues you’re experiencing are caused by software that loads during startup. Here’s how to do it based on your Mac type:

Identifying Your Mac Type

  1. Click the Apple menu > About This Mac.
  2. If it says “Chip” followed by a name, you have a Mac with Apple silicon.
  3. If it says “Processor” followed by the name of an Intel processor, you have an Intel-based Mac.

For Macs with Apple Silicon

  1. Shut down your Mac by selecting Apple menu > Shut Down.
  2. Once it’s completely shut down (screen is black and lights are off), press and hold the power button until “Loading startup options” appears.
  3. Select your startup volume.
  4. Press and hold the Shift key, then click Continue in Safe Mode.
  5. Your Mac will restart and you should see “Safe Boot” in the menu bar at the login window.

For Intel-based Macs

  1. Turn on or restart your Mac.
  2. Immediately press and hold the Shift key.
  3. Release the Shift key when the login window appears.
  4. Log in to your Mac (you might need to log in twice).
  5. You should see “Safe Boot” in the menu bar on the login screen.
Verify Safe Mode

To confirm your Mac started in safe mode, use the System Information app:

  1. Press and hold the Option key, then click the Apple menu > System Information.
  2. Select Software in the sidebar.
  3. Check the value next to “Boot Mode” where “Safe” means your Mac is in safe mode and “Normal” means your Mac is not in safe mode.

8. Start Up in macOS Recovery

macOS Recovery provides a versatile set of tools to help you troubleshoot and fix various issues with your Mac.

Whether you need to reinstall macOS, restore from a backup, repair your disk, or change security settings, macOS Recovery has you covered.

It’s particularly useful for addressing problems that prevent your Mac from starting up normally, ensuring you can get your system back to a functional state.

How to Use macOS Recovery

macOS Recovery is a built-in recovery system on your Mac that provides a variety of tools to help you fix your computer. Here’s how to access and use macOS Recovery:

  1. To access macOS Recovery, shut down your Mac, turn it on and continue holding the power button until you see “Loading startup options”, then select Options and click Continue.
  2. In macOS Recovery, here are the tasks you can do:
    Task Steps
Reinstall macOS Select “Reinstall macOS”, click Continue, and ensure you have an internet connection to download the installation files.
Restore from Time Machine Backup Choose “Restore from Time Machine” and follow the on-screen instructions to recover your data.

Browse the Web for Support Information Select “Safari” and click Continue.
Set Security Policies Choose “Startup Security Utility” from the Utilities menu.
Access Command Line Select “Terminal” from the Utilities menu.
Share Disk Select “Share Disk” from the Utilities menu.
Set Startup Disk Choose “Startup Disk” from the Apple menu.

Note: If you need to prepare your Mac for trade-in or sale, use the Erase Assistant in macOS by starting up your computer normally, going to Apple menu > System Settings > General > Transfer or Reset, then clicking “Erase All Content and Settings” and following the instructions.

Then, go to Color on the top menu bar and select Copy as Text, or use the shortcut key Command + Shift + T.

At its core, a Webloc file is straightforward – it’s a small file that stores the URL of a website.

You can think of it as a direct link to a web page that you can double-click to open in your default web browser. The concept might seem simple, yet it’s this simplicity that encapsulates the beauty of Webloc files.

Webloc Mac file

They enable users to keep a tidy and organized desktop or folder system where important or frequently visited websites are just a click away, without the need to open a browser and navigate through bookmarks.

Origins and Purpose of Webloc Format

The Webloc format has its origins in the Mac OS, now known as macOS.

It was introduced as a convenient way for users to save links to websites directly from their browsers to their computer. This was particularly useful for users who needed quick access to specific web pages without the need to launch a web browser and sift through bookmarks.

Technical Overview

At its essence, a Webloc file is an XML plist (property list) file that macOS utilizes to store properties and configuration settings for various applications.

However, for Webloc files, the primary focus is on storing a single URL. When you create a Webloc file, macOS wraps the URL into this plist format, which then allows the operating system to recognize and act upon the file, essentially treating it as a direct link to the internet.

Creating a Webloc File on macOS

The process is intuitively simple:

  1. Navigate to the website you wish to bookmark outside your browser.
  2. Drag the website’s URL from the address bar of your browser to your desktop or any folder within Finder.
  3. macOS automatically creates a Webloc file, using the webpage’s title as the file name.

FAQs

What is a Webloc file and why is it useful?

A Webloc file is a macOS-specific file format used to save web URLs as files on your computer. It allows you to access your favorite web pages directly from your desktop or any folder, bypassing the need to open a browser and navigate through bookmarks.

Can Webloc files be opened on Windows?

Natively, Windows does not recognize Webloc files. However, several third-party tools and online services can open or convert Webloc files to Windows-compatible formats, such as URL files. This ensures that the convenience of Webloc files can be enjoyed across different operating systems.

Are Webloc files safe to use?

Webloc files are generally safe to use, provided they link to trusted websites. However, like any file that directs to online content, they can be manipulated to lead to malicious sites. Always ensure the Webloc files you open come from reputable sources, and consider scanning them with security software if you’re unsure.

Can I edit a Webloc file to change its URL?

As screen resolutions continue to improve, grainy, low-quality videos really stand out like a sore thumb. Now, more than ever, it’s crucial to ensure your videos are crisp and clear, providing the best viewing experience to your audience or anyone you wish to share them with.

Don’t worry if your videos aren’t perfect. Many of us have old videos taken with lower-spec phones that don’t measure up to today’s standards.

However, there’s hope for those precious memories.

This guide is for anyone looking to breathe new life into low-quality videos and cherished clips from the past.

Why Your Videos Look Bad

First, let’s understand why some videos appear to be of poor quality. There are several reasons for this, including videos taken on older phones with less sophisticated lenses, unstable handheld shooting, or quality reduction due to compression during transfer.

Here’s a closer look at common factors that can affect video quality.

Low Resolution

Low resolution results in videos that look blurry and distorted. This is common in videos captured with low-quality cameras, like many from our childhood.

Additionally, improper editing can worsen video quality. Also, as we move towards a world where 4K is becoming standard, even 1080p can seem dull in comparison. So, resolution plays a big part in video quality.

Low Framerate

Improper frame rate and shutter speed can also degrade video quality during recording. A general rule is to set the shutter speed to double the frame rate—for instance, 1/60 for a 30 fps video or 1/120 for a 60 fps video. This helps ensure your video remains smooth, blur-free, and without any flicker.

Compression Issues

Compressing a video for uploading to a specific platform can impact its quality. This usually occurs when an improper compression algorithm is used, highlighting the importance of appropriate compression techniques.

Unsupported Encoding

Using incorrect compression codecs can lead to poor video quality, often introducing glitches and artifacts. In some cases, this may even prevent the video from playing correctly.

Encoding Errors

Encoding errors can cause issues with audio synchronization and overall video quality, especially when the video’s format is changed during compression.

Can I Enhance Video Quality for Free?

Sure, you can.

We are now living in a world where almost any technical problem you have comes with a workaround and a solution, given the right tool. Speaking of the right tool, Tenorshare 4DDiG File Repair Tool is one such tool you can leverage to remedy bad quality video.

Also, we will discuss some other methods that work great as well.

1. Fix Bad-Quality Videos with Tenorshare 4DDiG File Repair Tool

Tenorshare 4DDiG is a user-friendly app compatible with both Mac and Windows that uses AI to enhance and repair video quality. It works with videos taken on mobile phones, cameras including Canon and Nikon, or drones like DJI. Adding video for enhancement

Step 3:

Click on the preview button at the bottom. The tool will start enhancing your video, showing you the first 10 frames of the enhanced version.

Previewing video enhancement

Exporting enhanced video

And that’s it, you should now have a better-quality version of your video.

Check out Tenorshare 4DDiG File Repair

2. Re-download the Videos

It might seem obvious, but re-downloading the video to replace your original one can actually improve its quality.

This applies to videos you’ve previously downloaded from the internet or other sources where a higher quality version might be available.

3. Adjusting Video Settings

Adjusting the video settings on your device can significantly enhance the quality of your recordings. This process involves tweaking various parameters to get the best possible output. For instance, on smartphones like the iPhone, enabling 4K at 60 frames per second (FPS) can dramatically improve both resolution and frame rate, leading to crisper, smoother video playback.

Another key adjustment is exposure. By tapping on the screen and dragging the exposure slider, you can adjust the brightness and contrast of your video, making it look clearer and more vibrant. This simple step can make a big difference in the overall quality of your videos.

After you’ve finished recording, exporting your video at 1080P 60FPS using a video editing app can help maintain its quality by preventing further compression. For those using high-end devices like the iPhone 15 Pro Max, taking advantage of built-in camera features can ensure you’re capturing high-quality video without the need for third-party applications.

Enhancing color rendition and skin tones can be achieved by applying Neutral Phantom LUTs (Look-Up Tables) and filters, especially on top of Apple’s Log format. Moreover, using ND (Neutral Density) filters can improve motion blur and color quality by allowing you to use a slower shutter speed. This is particularly useful in bright conditions, helping to avoid overexposed footage and ensure your video looks natural and professional.

These adjustments are straightforward yet effective ways to improve video quality directly from your device, eliminating the need for external applications.

4. Update Video Drivers

For crisp, high-quality video playback on your PC, ensuring that your graphics driver and graphics card (GPU or graphics processing unit) are functioning correctly is crucial.

If you’re experiencing poor video quality, it could be due to issues with your drivers, such as corruption or improper installation.

To address this issue, follow the instructions below:

  1. Go to the Windows Start menu at the bottom left of your screen, type “device manager,” and open it.
  2. Opening Device Manager
  3. In the Device Manager, click on “Display adapters” in the left sidebar. You’ll then see your graphics card listed. Right-click on your graphics card and select “Properties.”
  4. Accessing Graphics Card Properties
  5. Select the “Driver” tab in the upper menu bar of the properties window, then click on “Driver Details.”
  6. Viewing Driver Details
  7. Choose “Search automatically for drivers” and follow the on-screen instructions to update your driver.
  8. Updating Drivers

Updating your video drivers can significantly improve video playback quality on your PC by ensuring your graphics hardware works optimally.

Conclusion

Bringing your videos back to life doesn’t have to be daunting. With a few clicks and tweaks, from the advanced fixes of Tenorshare 4DDiG to the simplicity of adjusting your device’s settings, crystal-clear quality is within reach.

Whether it’s fixing old gems or ensuring your new clips dazzle, remember: great video quality isn’t just about the right tools—it’s about preserving and sharing your moments in the best light possible.

Now let’s make every pixel count.

I know what you’re thinking: why bother with the command line for screenshots when I can just navigate to the website via a browser and take a screenshot using Mac’s keyboard shortcut or a screenshot tool?

Well, couple of reasons really.

Firstly, it’s genuinely enjoyable and useful to know. Secondly, using command lines allows for automation. You can duplicate commands, compile them into a script, and run it to batch capture screenshots of predetermined websites or URLs.

To take a screenshot on your Mac using the command line, here’s how to do it. Start by opening the Terminal app (duh!)

Next, you’ll need to adjust the following command to specify two key things:

  1. your screenshot’s saved location and its filename, and
  2. the URL of the website you want to capture.
/Applications/Google\ Chrome.app/Contents/MacOS/Google\ Chrome \
  --headless \
  --screenshot=/path/to/screenshot/image.png \
  https://www.domain.com

Let’s walk through an example. If you want to capture a screenshot of apple.com, name it "apple.jpg", and save it to a folder named "screenshots", this is how your command would look:

/Applications/Google\ Chrome.app/Contents/MacOS/Google\ Chrome \
  --headless \
  --screenshot=/screenshots/apple.png \
  https://www.apple.com

And this is what the screenshot will look like:

Standard apple.com screenshot

If you wish to customize the screenshot’s dimensions, you can do so by adding the following parameter:

--window-size=WIDTH,HEIGHT

For instance, to capture a screenshot of apple.com at a resolution of 450×800, your command should be formatted as follows:

/Applications/Google\ Chrome.app/Contents/MacOS/Google\ Chrome \
  --headless \
  --window-size=450,800 \
  --screenshot=/screenshots/apple.png \
  https://apple.com

And here’s the resulting image:

Custom-size apple.com screenshot

Cricut Design Space is a handy app designed for crafting enthusiasts who use Cricut cutting machines. It’s a one-stop shop where you can either whip up your own unique designs from scratch or tweak existing ones to your heart’s content. The app gives you the freedom to upload your own images and fonts, plus it offers a treasure trove of pre-made templates and graphics right at your fingertips.

I’ve been using this app for a variety of print and cut craft projects for some time now. It’s actually the only app that lets you communicate directly with your Cricut machine, which is pretty cool. Overall, it’s a great tool, but I can’t help feeling that it’s missing a few bells and whistles—some of which are quite crucial. Here are my thoughts on the features or functions that are noticeably absent from the app and really should be included.

Turning off Cricut Access prompts

Cricut Access is a subscription service that, for about $10 a month, offers exclusive access to thousands of images, projects, and fonts. If you haven’t subscribed to it, every time you open the app, it prompts you to consider subscribing.

You can dismiss the prompt by clicking the X button, but it pops up again every time you launch the app.

Cricut Access subscription prompt

Additionally, it appears in the sidebar and a few other spots within the app.

Cricut Access in sidebar

I find this quite irritating because it keeps showing up after you launch the app, even if you’ve previously clicked the X to dismiss it. It would be really helpful if Cricut could include a feature that remembers our preference to not see this subscription prompt repeatedly.

Enabling Users to Delete Pattern Fills

Within the sidebar’s upload feature, you have the option to upload your own artwork for use in print and cut projects. Cricut allows you to upload your artwork either as an image for your designs or as a pattern fill to be used as a background or texture in your designs.

If you upload artwork as an image, you can find it under Images > Uploaded. From there, you can organize your images into folders or delete them if necessary.

Uploaded images management

However, when it comes to artwork uploaded as a Pattern Fill, there’s currently no option to delete them. So, for those who frequently upload artwork for Pattern Fill, you might find your Design Space getting cluttered with old pattern fills that you no longer need or want.

It would be incredibly useful if Cricut introduced the ability to delete unwanted pattern fills to keep our design space tidy and organized.

Bulk Deletion for Uploaded Items

When it comes to deleting uploaded items and keeping the Design Space tidy, as of now, Cricut Design Space lacks the ability to let users delete uploaded images in bulk. Currently, deleting images is a bit of a hassle.

To delete an image, you first need to click on the specific image you want to remove. Then, on the next page, click the three-dot menu and select delete.

Deleting an image process

Now, imagine wanting to delete 20-50 images that you’ve already uploaded.

This process can be quite time-consuming and inconvenient for users who frequently update their design libraries or need to clear out space. Introducing a bulk delete option would significantly streamline the process, making it much easier and faster for users to manage their uploaded content and keep their Design Space organized and efficient.

The .DS_Store file, an abbreviation for Desktop Services Store, is a hidden file created by Apple’s macOS operating system.

It serves a very specific purpose: to store custom attributes of a folder such as the positions of icons or the choice of a background image.

Essentially, the .DS_Store file helps macOS remember how a folder’s window is configured and displayed to the user. Whenever you open a folder and adjust its view settings (like changing the size of icons, or sorting files by name, date, or size), macOS writes these preferences into a .DS_Store file located within that folder.

DS_store file

Interestingly, these files are not static; they are generated automatically in every folder you interact with, ensuring that your customizations are preserved between sessions.

This means that your personalized setup remains intact, offering a consistent and tailored user experience.

Technical Overview of .DS_Store File

Diving deeper into the technicalities, the .DS_Store file is a binary file, which means it’s not meant to be read or edited directly by users.

Its structure is proprietary and primarily understood by macOS. However, several third-party tools and libraries have been developed to read and sometimes manipulate these files for various purposes, like forensic analysis or cleanup operations.

The content of a .DS_Store file can include a wide array of data, from the size and position of windows to the choice of view mode (list, icons, columns, or cover flow) for each folder.

Advanced users and developers sometimes use specialized software to peek into these files, gaining insights into how macOS stores folder preferences and even extracting useful information for troubleshooting.

The Role of .DS_Store File in macOS

In the ecosystem of macOS, the .DS_Store file plays a crucial role in enhancing the user interface and experience. It allows users to customize their folders and have those customizations remain consistent across sessions.

This capability is particularly useful for individuals who work with a large number of files and require specific arrangements to maintain efficiency.

Beyond individual preferences, .DS_Store files are also instrumental in providing a uniform look and feel when packaging software or distributing files, ensuring that the end-user sees the folders as intended by the developer or designer.

.DS_Store Files and Cross-Platform Compatibility

When it comes to cross-platform environments, .DS_Store files can become somewhat of an anomaly. For users who work across macOS, Windows, and Linux systems, these files often appear as unnecessary or orphaned files in directories shared or transferred between different operating systems.

While harmless on macOS, they can clutter directories and confuse users on other platforms who are not familiar with the purpose of these hidden files.

This cross-platform visibility highlights the need for awareness and management, especially when sharing files between macOS and non-macOS users.

Security and Privacy Concerns with .DS_Store Files

One aspect of .DS_Store files that often goes overlooked is their potential to leak information. Since these files store details about folder contents and user preferences, they could inadvertently reveal sensitive information about file structures, naming conventions, or even metadata that was intended to be private.

For instance, in a web server directory that’s improperly configured to list directory contents, a .DS_Store file could expose information about files not linked from the site’s HTML pages, posing a security risk.

To mitigate these concerns, it’s crucial for users and administrators to be vigilant about where .DS_Store files are created and to employ strategies to prevent their unintended dissemination, especially on publicly accessible platforms.

Managing .DS_Store Files

The management of .DS_Store files can be approached from two angles: preventing their creation and removing existing ones.

On macOS, completely preventing .DS_Store file creation involves terminal commands and might impact the user experience negatively by disabling folder view customizations.

However, for shared or network directories where these files could be problematic, such measures can be worthwhile.

Deleting existing .DS_Store files, especially before zipping folders for sharing or uploading to a version control system, can be done manually or with scripts. Numerous command-line tools and scripts are available to recursively find and delete these files from a directory structure, ensuring they do not accompany shared files.

.DS_Store Files in Version Control Systems

For developers and teams using version control systems like Git, .DS_Store files can become a nuisance, cluttering repositories with unnecessary changes. It’s a best practice to include .DS_Store in a project’s .gitignore file, preventing these files from being tracked and uploaded to the repository.

This step helps maintain clean and relevant repositories, focusing on the code and resources that matter.

.DS_Store Files and Network Drives

In environments with networked drives accessed by macOS systems, .DS_Store files can accumulate, potentially impacting performance and usability.

Large numbers of these files can slow down directory listing operations and confuse users unfamiliar with macOS. Managing these files through scheduled cleanup or educating users on how to manually clean them can mitigate these issues.

Troubleshooting Common .DS_Store File Issues

Occasionally, .DS_Store files can become corrupted, leading to issues like folders not displaying correctly or the Finder behaving erratically. Deleting the problematic .DS_Store file allows macOS to recreate it from scratch, often resolving these issues.

While not common, understanding how to identify and address these situations can be valuable for macOS users.

Final Words

.DS_Store files, while small and seemingly insignificant, play an important role in the macOS user experience by preserving folder view preferences.

However, their presence in shared environments and on other platforms necessitates careful management. Best practices include excluding these files from version control systems, regularly cleaning them from shared directories, and being mindful of their potential to leak information.

By understanding and managing .DS_Store files effectively, users can maintain efficient workflows and secure environments.

6. Open Excel File in Another Program

Opening the error Excel file in an alternative spreadsheet application like Google Sheets can be a workaround. Google Sheets may correct minor errors within the file and also enables you to edit tables directly in your browser or save the Excel file as an XLSX document.

If the problematic Excel file functions correctly in Google Sheets, it’s possible that the file association settings in Windows are incorrect, which could be causing the issue.

Conclusion

We have previously written a post on how you can use Google Sheets to track your portfolio, where you can include your stock’s name, buy price, and shares owned, and the sheet will automatically calculate your total cost and profit/loss for you.

Alternatively, if you are not looking to create one, there are also free Google Sheet templates online that you can duplicate and use as your own.

However, this tool is not free. It offers a 7-day free trial, after which the cost is $34.95 per month or $249 per year.
